4E Character analysis

me

So my character for my new Sunday game is here: http://dndorks.com/4e/jondolarsulvak.xps (or http://dndorks.com/4e/jondolarsulvak.pdf if you aren't using an adobe pdf reader).

Differences from 3.5
My AC is higher relatively.
You get to use either your intelligence or dexterity for AC, so right out of the box I'm pretty good to go.  A rogue would have 2 higher for the same dex as my int and wearing armor, but otherwise I feel pretty confident in my ability to avoid combat.

My skill checks are a bit higher on average I think.
Before my highest skill check barring weird suboptimal feats would be 4+5 (and actually in 3.5 I couldn't have an intelligence of 20 as a human), but I'd have more skills with ranks in them before than I do now have trained skills.  The flip side of that is that my skills are potentially more useful now than they were before, since a larger part of the game emphasizes the use of skills for skill encounter resolution (and worth xp) and since skills have been grouped together.

I didn't write my weapon damage down.
I have a quarterstaff or something, I suck with it, +0 to hit.  I carry some orb too, maybe I can brain someone also with a +0 to attack.  ;)  The reality is that because of my at will powers I shouldn't ever need my quarterstaff at lvl 1.  When I "do" use my at will attacks, I'll get a nice +5 to hit either Reflex or fortitude and deal either 1d6 + 5 to up to 4 targets (for scorching burst mini-fireballs), 2d4+5 to 1 target (for magic missile with double the range of scorching burst), or 1d6+5 to 1 target (with the sidebonus of slowing the target creature for 1 round, or 2 if I use my orb).

No familiar
There are no familiar rules in 4th ed, though I think they plan to release them perhaps as a ritual or feat later.  4th ed de-emphasizes pets, so we'll see how that goes.  The "majority" of times in play we ignore the existance of the familiar, though when it is used it tends to be pretty cool.

I started with the same money as the fighter and everyone else (and I'm poor).
I had to buy some of my impliments, and some resources to be able to use my rituals, but otherwise I had money to spare for buying junk and being good to go.  I think its nice to have everyone starting with the same amount of gold.

I feel like a wizard
I'll be throwing area effect damage, slowing the big bosses down, or just dealing straight force damage old school on a constant basis.  When I "really" want to flash, I'll be summoning flaming spheres (oh and its useful in 4e, unlike 3.5 which you don't get until lvl 3 and its junk), laying out clouds that disorient my foes, or dazing targets with chilling strikes..

I "don't" miss 2-3 spells a day as a lvl 1 wizard.  But maybe my fighter friends will regret my growth in power. Mwa!  Anna is making a fighter, I'll post it and an analysis in a week after she finishes it.

As a side note, season 1 of Buffy Behind the Lines just finished.  It was awesome, tied some stuff up that I wasn't really sure where they were going with it when they introduced it earlier. If you haven't checked it out yet, and consider yourself a Buffy or Joss fan, check it out!

And finally, still waiting for my offer for the house I really want to be either refused or accepted.  Its been 10 days. :(

Well first off let me say that I listen to podcasts while I work. Thats a good 7+ hours a day of media, conversations, etc that I passively absorb while programming intense enterprise level solutions for an insurance company's public and private facing websites (I'm the lead developer so I meld everyone else's code together into the sites). In other words I miss a lot of obvious things that other people probably don't. But off hand I was confused by the one episode where it talked about the battle between the navajo spirits and the demons. I thought it was cool and interesting, I always like things revolving around sunnydale's colorful past, but I didn't see why the navajo story was just there in the middle of the other episodes, I probably missed some reference earlier on as to how the earthquake was to be created. At any rate the pieces fell together in the final episode and if I just missed something then maybe I'll "get it" when I rego through all the episodes now that my new zune came in the mail and I can listen to it while driving around.

Very cool :) Yeah the navajo spirits were through out the other episodes, but not really explained until the minisode (the path you take) and ep 12. There was some explination in ep 6.
